FBI Basic Firearms Instructor School

The FBI Jackson Field Office will host a 40-hour Basic Firearms Instructors School (FIS) from March 28th, 2022, to April 1st, 2022, at the FBI Range at the Mississippi Law Enforcement Officer’s Training Academy (MLEOTA) in Pearl, MS.  The school will be conducted by Firearms Instructors from the FBI Jackson Field Office.  This school is intended for currently sworn officers/agents of local, state, or federal law enforcement agencies who are or will be a part of their agency’s firearms program.

There is no registration fee or tuition for this training, however, each attending officer or his/her agency must provide his/her own weapons, firearms-related equipment, ammunition, and other supplies.

To be accepted into the FIS, each requesting student must attend at least one mandatory 2-hour Pre-Qualification session where they will be familiarized with the FBI Bulls-Eye Course and afforded the opportunity to shoot a qualifying score during a record run of the FBI Bulls-Eye Course.  The officer must shoot a qualifying score of 260 or better out of 300 on the FBI Bulls-Eye Course on at least one out of three attempts during that session.

The Pre-Qualification sessions will be held at the FBI Range on the below dates and times:

                                February 11, 2022, at 1000

                                February 25, 2022, at 1000

                                March 18, 2022, at 1000

Potential Students may and are encouraged to attend more than one Pre-Qualification Session but must attend at least one.  Potential Students are encouraged to attend the first Session (February 11th) to acclimate themselves on the course as early as possible.

A minimum of 9 officers must qualify for the FIS to be held.  A maximum of 20 officers will be accepted into the school.  If an agency has more than three officers qualify, three will be accepted into the school and the remaining placed on a waiting list, determined by their agency’s PFI.  After the last pre-Qual, officers will be notified as to whether they will be accepted to attend.

This school is for law enforcement officers who will be used as firearms instructors for their respective agencies; therefore, student officers should be very proficient with all firearms used by their agencies.  This proficiency should cover all aspects of weapons handling.  Officers should not attend FIS without a thorough knowledge of how to shoot, reload, and manipulate the department-issued or approved pistol, patrol rifle and shotgun.  Familiarization and instruction on revolvers will be provided at FIS.

Students who are accepted into the school must be present for training every day and participate in all blocks of instruction to receive their certificates of completion.  If a student has a prior commitment (i.e., court, family), the student should make every effort to change their schedule to enable them to be present during the entire week of instruction.  Student officers must also pass a 25-question multiple choice written exam with a score of 80 or better.

FIS will begin each day at 8:00 am and conclude at approximately 5:00 pm.  There is a possibility that instruction will go past 5:00 pm.

Officers wishing to attend a Pre-Qualification session and/or the FIS can contact SA Chris Cheatham at 662-497-2798, clcheatham@fbi.gov to register.  See the additional attachments for the required equipment for the Pre-Qualification session and the Firearms Instructor School.
